Practical Note
CRITICAL COMPARISON: In the IPC, Section 311 punished the offence of being a 'Thug' (which is now repealed). BNS Section 311 corresponds to the famous IPC Section 397 (aggravated robbery/dacoity). It specifies a mandatory minimum sentence of 7 years, meaning the court cannot award a lower sentence if a deadly weapon is used or grievous hurt is caused.
