Snatching

Full Text

(1) Theft is snatching if, in order to commit theft, the offender suddenly or quickly or forcibly seizes or secures or grabs or takes away from any person or from his possession any movable property.

(2) Whoever commits snatching, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Plain English Summary

Defines snatching as a specific form of theft where movable property is suddenly, quickly, or forcibly seized or taken from a person's possession, carrying up to 3 years imprisonment and fine.

Key Legal Elements

  • Commission of theft
  • Movable property is seized, secured, grabbed, or taken away from a person or their possession
  • The act is done suddenly, quickly, or forcibly

Punishment

Imprisonment up to 3 years, and fine

Practical Note

This is a newly introduced standalone section in BNS. Previously, snatching did not have a dedicated IPC section (unless state-amended) and was prosecuted under simple theft (IPC 379) or criminal force (IPC 356). Under BNS, it is non-bailable, making it easier for police to detain snatching suspects.
